Obituary of William-Kenneth Ebert


EBERT, William Kenneth, Q.C. - died peacefully at the Welland County General Hospital on August 23rd, 2009 at the age of 80 following a brief illness. Bill was well known in Port Colborne and the Niagara legal community as a litigator and one of his noted cases was heard by the Supreme Court of Canada and represented a breakthrough for consumers in the law of product liability. He was a generous man, his handshake was his bond but he was also known for his occasionally prickly personality. Bill is survived by his wife June, his daughter Charlene Hutton (Ken) of St. Catharines and his son John of Port Colborne. He was the proud grandfather of Jeremy Hutton, Sidney Hutton and Julia Hutton. He is survived by his sisters Edith, Kay, June and Joy. He was predeceased by his parents Fred and Edith Ebert and his brothers Fred and Tim. Educated in Port Colborne, at McMaster University and Osgoode Hall Law School, he was called to the bar in 1958. He articled with McMillan Binch, Toronto and commenced the practice of law with the firm of Davies and Ebert in Port Colborne in 1958, retiring in 1995. He was a former member and President of the Welland County Law Association, member and President of the Port Colborne Club, member of the board of the predecessor of Community Living Port Colborne-Wainfleet, member and President of the Rotary Club of Port Colborne and named a Paul Harris Fellow. The Port Colborne Senior Citizens Centre was a project spearheaded by Rotary under Bill's direction. A private family service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery. Donations may be made to Friends Over 55, (Port Colborne Senior Citizens Centre) or Community Living Port Colborne- Wainfleet. The family thanks the staff of Six East at WCGH, particularly Dr. Ali, and nurses Kathy and Denise for their care during Bill's last days.
