SCHENECTADY William J. Glenn, 88, of Kingsway Village, died Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at home. Mr. Glenn was born in Schenectady to the late James and Agnes Ryan Glenn. He was a lifelong city resident. Mr. Glenn was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a firefighter for the City of Schenectady for 29 years, retiring as a lieutenant in 1973. Mr. Glenn was predeceased by his wife of 59 years Merle A. Glenn, she died in 2002; and a sister, Helen Hayle. He is survived by one son, James W. (Denise) Glenn of West Dover, Vt.; one daughter, Kathleen A. (Joseph) Metzger of Colonie; five grandchildren, Shawn Glenn, Darren Glenn and Kerry Glenn, all of Calif., Joseph Metzger and Michael Metzger, both of Colonie; four great-grandchildren; and one niece, Helen Ann Purcell of Croton-on-Hudson. Mr. Glenn was a past president of the Schenectady Permanent Fireman's Association. He was a member of the Knights of St. John, the Schenectady Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Retired Schenectady Permanent Firefighter's Association and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Schenectady. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted Saturday morning at 8:15 at the Gleason Funeral Home, 730 Union Street and at 9:00 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Bradt Street, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Schenectady. The Knights of St. John will meet at the funeral home Friday evening at 5:30 to conduct a service. The active and retired members of the Schenectady Fire Department will meet at the funeral home Friday evening at 7:00 to conduct a service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 520 Hegeman Street, Schenectady, NY 12306.
