MAZAMA, Wash. -- Robert Eugene Freeman, 76, of Mazama died instantly in a one-car automobile accident on Feb. 17, 2004, in Mazama.Mr. Freeman was born March 20, 1927, in Brattleboro, Vt. He was son of Hugh Freeman and Cecil Briggs of Brattleboro and stepson of Ada Freeman Meers of Vernon, Vt.He was a 1945 graduate of Brattleboro High School and a 1952 graduate of the University of Michigan. He turned down an appointment to West Point and enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation.He was married to Linda Freeman. His first marriage to Beth Freeman ended in divorce.In high school he was a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams and was an Eagle Scout. He played football while in college. He was a volunteer firefighter in Mazama.Mr. Freeman was a member of the Catholic church.He was a retired engineer from Hughes Aircraft.In addition to his mother, his stepmother and his wife, Mr. Freeman is survived by two sons, Mike Freeman of Encinitus, Calif., and Tim Freeman of Port Hueneme, Calif.; four daughters, Mary Beth Bale of Temecula, Calif., Karen Winkle of Fullerton, Calif., Kathy Reiss of Orange, Calif., and Karol Cofini of Garden Grove, Calif.; a stepson, Kyle Summers; a stepdaughter, Kelly Rostan; three brothers, Larry Freeman of Morin Heights, Quebec, Canada, Art Freeman of Brattleboro, and Jeff Freeman of Washington, D.C.; and 15 grandchildren.He was predeceased by his father.Funeral services were held in Twisp, Wash., on Feb. 23. A memorial service was held in Anaheim, Calif., on March 1.Donations in memory of Mr. Freeman may be made to Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 1453, Spokane, WA 99210-1453.
