MIDDLETON, Nancy Yvonne Passed away peacefully in her sleep with family beside her at Victoria General Hospital on December 6, 2010. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, in 1996 and her eldest son, Thomas Robert in 1942. She is survived by her sons, Robert Farrar of Victoria, and Gerald Rae, of Vancouver and by her granddaughters, Jennifer (Jules) in Melbourne and Geneva (Jonas) of Calgary and by her grandson, Ashley, of Vancouver. Born in Scarborough, England on September 19, 1917, she was the only child of Captain T.F. Smellie, O.B.E. and his wife, Annie, and came to Edmonton with them in 1929. She later obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba. Following her marriage she spent forty years at Hudson's Bay Company furtrading posts in northern Canada, including twenty-five years at McLeod Lake, British Columbia. She was a charter member and president of the McLeod's Lake Centennial Club (1958) and chairman of the McLeod Lake Centennial Committees in 1967 and 1971. From 1966 to 1972 she served as a Director of the Fraser-Fort George Regional District and was vice-chairman of the Mackenzie and District Hospital Board of Management. In 1960 she won a province-wide contest for a legend "AURORA QUEEN OF THE EVERGREENS", published by the Aurora Queen Committee of Prince George with financial assistance from Carling Community Arts Foundation. Articles were also published in BC Outdoors and in the magazine sections of the Victoria Daily Colonist and Prince George Citizen. Since 1980 she has been a resident of Victoria, a past president of The Women's Canadian Club, a life member of the Canadian Club of Victoria and the SPCA. Mother was a wonderful warm-hearted cheerful person with a quick wit and great sense of humor. She will be deeply missed by family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, December 10, 2010 at First Memorial Funeral Services, 1155 Fort Street, Victoria, BC. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, the S.P.CA or charity of your choice.
