Obituary of McLaughlin-Earl Reid

McLAUGHLIN Earl Reid McLaughlin passed away on Sept. 5, 2010, at his home in Lynnwood, WA., after a brief illness. Reid was born on June 28, 1918, in Nashville, GA., delivered by his Grandfather, Dr. L.A. Carter, in the Carter House. He was raised in Jesup, GA. by his parents, Dr. James Thomas and Jessamond Dae Carter McLaughlin. After graduation from Jesup High School in 1936 he attended the University of Georgia where he joined Sigma Chi fraternity and graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry. While at the U of GA. Reid met his future wife, Nell Adams. Upon graduation Reid joined the US Marine Corps and served as a pilot in the South Pacific during WWII. Among other service/flying medals he was presented with a Distinguished Flying Cross with one star. Reid and Nell were married in April 1944 and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Reid made the Marine Corps his career and upon retirement he and Nell moved to Jacksonville, FL. During those years, Reid was a member of several organizations including Navy League, FL. Sheriffs Association, SAR, SCV and he and Nell supported numerous local charities, including the 200 Club. Several years ago Reid and Nell moved to Lynnwood, WA. to be near their Great- grandchildren. Nell went home to be with the Lord in Dec. 2009, and Reid now joins her. He is survived by his children, two grandsons, Peter and Michael Carroll, son-in-law Patrick Carroll, granddaughter-in-law Stacy Carroll, two great grandchildren, Madilyn and Jacob, and five nephews. Reid was a proud Shriner. He received his 50 year Scottish Rite Mason pin in 2008 and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
