Obituary of Katherine-R. Carpenter

KATHERINE R. CARPENTER - BURLINGTON - Katherine R. Carpenter, 99, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, following a lengthy illness. Katherine, known as "Kit" to many, was born in Montpelier on March 15, 1916, the oldest daughter of Thomas Joseph and Katherine "Katie" Agnes (Smith) Redmond. She was educated in the St. Michael's school system and graduated high school as Salutatorian of the Class of 1933. In 1948, she married Merritt E. Carpenter, Jr., also of Montpelier (and Charlotte), and after many years working in the banking business in Burlington, Katherine retired from Merchants Bank in 1981. Following retirement, she and Merritt traveled the world extensively. Katherine was a member of the Lake Champlain Maritime Society, the Vermont Historical Society, and the Chittenden County Historical Society. Katherine is survived by three sisters-in-law, Maria Redmond and Pauline Redmond, both of Montpelier, and Theresa Redmond of Saratoga, N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Stephen "Toby" Hart of Montpelier; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband on May 3, 2005; five sisters, Marjorie, Madeline, Patricia, Frances, and Jean; and four brothers, Matthew, Paul, Frederick, and Mark. A sincere thank you to the Visiting Nurse Association of Chittenden County, the caring and supportive staff at the Converse Home, and the caring staff of TLC. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington (corner of St. Paul and Cherry Streets). Burial will be at the convenience of the family at the Grand View Cemetery in Charlotte. At Katherine's request, there will be no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 71 So. Union St., Burlington.
