Obituary of Joseph-Patrick Flannery


Joseph Patrick Flannery, 87, Venice, died July 28, 2004. He was born July 11, 1917, in Hagerstown, Md., and came to Venice 20 years ago. He was senior director at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., and director of finance for the State Department in Florida. He received a master's degree from George Washington University and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a finance officer in Europe. He was a board member of the Child Protection Center in Sarasota for 20 years and a board member of the South County Resource Center in Venice. He was a member of Epiphany Cathedral where he was a lector, Eucharistic minister and minister to the homebound. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Venice Yacht Club. Survivors include his wife, Mary; a daughter, Kathy Deerkoski of Rockville, Md.; stepdaughters Christine Nihill of Niceville, Marylu Clark of Preston, Conn., and Patricia Fasold of Freeport, Maine; five grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Epiphany Cathedral. Private inurnment will be in Epiphany Memorial Gardens. Ewing Funeral Home, Venice, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Epiphany Cathedral, 310 Sarasota St., Venice, FL 34285; or to Child Protection Center of Sarasota, 1750 17th St., Sarasota, FL 34234.
