James Charles O'Donnell died peacefully at St. Michael's Medical Center ICU on Monday, July 29, 2013. He was 88. The funeral will be conducted from the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison, N.J. 07029, on Friday at 9:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass will take place at Holy Cross Church, Harrison, at 10 a.m. Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. For information, directions or to send condolences to the family please visit mulliganfuneralhome.org. James was born on Jan. 10, 1925, in Cumberland, England, to James O'Donnell of Dunloe, Ireland, and Agnes Rodgers of Bathgate, Scotland. The family moved to Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland, in 1931. During World War II, James served in what was then Burma with the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Ligth Infantry and later the Cumberland Regiment of the British Army. In 1958 James emigrated to the U.S., joining his older brother, John. Until the early 1980s, he worked as a machine tool operator for McKiernan-Terry, Harrison, N.J., and other machine manufacturing companies in northern New Jersey. After his retirement, he volunteered at Holy Cross Church taking care of the Fatima garden. Prior to that, he was a member of the church's Holy Name Society. James had a fine tenor singing voice. He loved old movies and was a lifelong ardent supporter of the Glasgow Celtic Football Club. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anne Keavney O'Donnell of Harrison; his sister, Denise O'Donnell of South Queensferry, Scotland; his son, James; daughter, Annette, and granddaughter, Hanne, all of Harrison. He was predeceased by his daughter, Elaine Agnes O'Donnell, and his brother, John O'Donnell.
