DOVER — John E. Fagan, 89, of Highland Street, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at the North Shore Medical Center, Salem Hospital, Salem, Mass.Born in Dover on March 1, 1922, the son of Arthur and Catherine (Callahan) Fagan he has lived all of his life and was a graduate of Dover High School. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II having served in the South Pacific.Early in his working career he joined the Strand Theater Group and managed the Strand Theater in Dover. In the early 1960s he went to work with Foster's Daily Democrat newspaper and was assistant to the publisher when he retired in 1987.He was a 60-year member of the Dover Lodge of Elks and a 64-year member of the Dover Post #8, American Legion. He enjoyed golf, traveling, and gardening and loved the ocean. John especially enjoyed being with his granddaughters.He was a communicant of the Parish of the Assumption, St. Joseph Church.The widower of Lois (Foster) Fagan who died in 1995, he is survived by two sons, Dr. Gary J. Fagan and his wife, Susan, of Marblehead, Mass., Mark R. Fagan and his wife, Elaine, of Stratham, two granddaughters, Julie Fagan and Kelly Fagan, both of Boston, Mass., and nieces and nephews.In addition to his wife he was predeceased by his brother, Donald A. Fagan, who died in 2001.Relatives and friends are invited to call Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Parish of the Assumption, St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorials in John's memory may be made to Team For Kids, using the attached link, as his granddaughter Kelly is running in the 2011 ING New York City Marathon with Team for Kids, please go to www.runwithtfk.org/Member/PublicPage/5865.
