Obituary of Helen-Nowels Mark

ObituaryHelen Nowels Mark, 90, of Fort Myers passed away Thursday May 27, 2009. She was born in Harrisburg, PA the daughter of the late Gennaro and Carmella Donadee. Helen graduated with a nursing degree from the University of Pennsylvania and was a proud member of the US Army as a Registered Nurse Captain serving overseas in WW II combat zones. She remained very active in her various military veterans organizations. She served in leadership roles in many organizations; St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Central & West Dade Deanery, South Dade Council of Catholic Women, Gee Gees, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Elks Lodge, South Miami Music Club, South Miami Orchid Club, AARP, Retired Officers Association and the Southwest Florida Symphony. Helen was a dedicated and active founding church member of Blessed Pope John XXIII Catholic Church and loved volunteering at the Thrift Shop. She will be remembered at her church for her gift of the church bells that ring every morning.Helen moved to Miami in 1958 with her husband Bob and founded a nursery school.She was preceded in death by her first husband LT Cmdr Robert E. Nowels, US Navy and her second husband Thaddeus Mark. Helen is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law Robert and Vickie Nowels of Tampa, grandson Andrew, 20 years old and a sophomore business student and football player at Florida State University and granddaughter Christie, 17, a junior at the Academy of Holy Names, and sister Lucille and brother-in-law Michael Hackett of Fort Myers and many adoring nieces and nephews. Helen's family will receive friends from 9am to 10:30am Saturday May 30th at Blessed Pope John XXIII Catholic Church with a mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30am. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery with her husband LT Cmdr Robert E. Nowels.Funeral arrangements under the direction of the Harvey-Engelhardt-Metz Funeral Home.
