Obituary of Edward-Joseph Finan

EDWARD JOSEPH "RED" FINAN (WWII Veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Artillery; Retired and Founding Director of Education of the Durham Region Roman Catholic School Board and School Board Trustee). Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Hillsdale Terraces on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012, in his 97th year. Beloved husband to Anne of 67 years. Loving father of Linda Quinn (John), Sharon Coughlin (Greg), Sean, Shelagh Sharrard (Marty), Maureen Kawzenuk (Jeff) and Colleen Finan. Cherished grandfather of Jackie, Eamonn, Lesley, Amanda, Ryan, Jeremy, Jacob, Justin, Jesse, Jaime, Jenna (Joelle, Jay, Charles, Kim and John), and great-grandfather to Jack, Maya and Quinn. Dear brother of Alec (Peggy) and Jack (Eileen), and predeceased by Harry (Kitty) and Mary Henderson (Dick). Ed is remembered for his many accomplishments teaching and coaching at Cathedral Boys High School, Hamilton and was a Member of the Hamilton Wild Cats Football Club, now known as the Tiger Cats. In June 1996 at St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto, Ed Finan became the recipient of a most prestigious award. He received the highest honour bestowed upon a lay person by the Roman Catholic Church, the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal. On behalf of the Finan family, many thanks to the staff at Hillsdale Terraces for their care and support of Ed over the past 9 months. Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Thursday, January 5th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER PARISH (1100 Mary St. N., Oshawa at the corner of Beatrice and Mary St.) on Friday, January 6th at 1:30 p.m. Donations made to the Oshawa Senior Citizens Centre or Hillsdale Terraces would be appreciated.
