Dr. Charles Dorsey Horton, age 92, died Sunday, October 3rd, at the McCall Hospice House of Greenville in Simpsonville, South Carolina. A native of Tennille, Georgia, Dr. Horton had lived in Statesboro for many years. He received his B.A. from Furman University, graduating in the top 10 in his class. Dr. Horton received his doctoral degree in Greek New Testament from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He worked as a principal and teacher while pursuing his education as well as other jobs. Dr. Horton pastored churches in Statesboro, Metter, Blakely, Acworth and other cities in Georgia and Kentucky. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Davenport of Lawrenceville; two sons, Charles Horton of Statesboro and John Horton of Simpsonville, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Charles Edward, Catherine Elizabeth, Carolyn Elise and Craig Edward Davenport of Lawrenceville, John Brady, Madelyn Adele and Samuel Hayes Horton of Simpsonville, S.C. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 6, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home of Statesboro, Georgia. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 7, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Statesboro with Dr. H. William Perry officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the Eastside Cemetery.
