Obituary of Alice Reed


BRANDON - Alice "Gail" Reed, age 73, died Monday evening, March 2, 2009, at her home in Brandon.Mrs. Reed was born in Flushing, New York, on September 30, 1935. She was the daughter of Dr. Arthur J. and Alice (Slater) Dick. She received her early education in Flushing, N.Y., schools and was graduated from Brandon High School, class of 1953, after moving to Vermont in her senior year. She continued her education at the University of Vermont where she was an active member of Tri Delta Sorority. Dance, influenced by her mother, was a passion of her youth and she made her debut at Carnegie Hall at the age of 3. She adored attending Broadway plays and listening to show tunes. On June 16, 1956, she married Donald Smith Reed in Brandon. His Naval career took them to Rhode Island, New York and California and finally back to Brandon, Vermont, where they made their home. Mr. Reed died June 13, 1991. Gail worked as a medical billing clerk for her father, Dr. Arthur Dick, and her brother, Dr. John Dick. Among her many talents, she was a gifted artist. Gail spent many years as a card designer for Crockett Card Co. and as a local artisan. She also worked in the local schools as a substitute art teacher and volunteer. Gail was an enthusiastic member of her community being active in the Garden Club, Monday Club and Brandon Historical Society. She was a spirited volunteer in many organizations as well. She enjoyed the arts, her garden, reading, sailing and spending as much time as possible on her beloved Lake Dunmore. Most of all, Gail enjoyed her family and friends. Her children would especially like to give their deepest gratitude to her brothers, Dr. John Dick and William Dick, for their endless love and care.Gail is survived by her son, Donald M. Reed and his wife Sue of Jeffersonville; her daughters, Alison Palmer of Brandon, Elizabeth Terwilliger of Biddeford, Maine, and Margaret G. Reimers and her husband Gary of San Francisco, Calif.; her brothers, Dr. John Dick and his wife Kathy of Salisbury and William "Bill" Dick and his wife Kathie of Brandon. Six grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her.Family and friends are invited to share in "A Celebration of Her Life" to be held on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at 2 p.m. at The Brandon Inn in Brandon, followed by continued fellowship and remembrance until 4 p.m.Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, may be made in her memory to The Brandon Free Public Library, 2 Franklin St., Brandon, VT; or The Brandon Area Rescue Squad, PO Box 232, Brandon, VT 05733.Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.View the guest book at www.rutlandherald.com/obits.
