Louis Cyr was born around 1685 in St-Eloi, Dunkerque, Nord district in France. Son of Jean Cyr and Marguerite Raimbault, he married Marie-Josèphe Michel, daughter of François and Marguerite Meunier, May 23, 1712 in Grand Pré, Acadia. From this union were born at least five children. He would have first been installed at Fort Beauséjour, and had left Beaubassin for Port-Lajoie, Île-Saint-Jean (PEI). He would eventually have won Québec, where he died June 22, 1757.

Louis Cyr was baptized Cyprien-Noé Cyr on October 10, 1863, in Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville. From the age of 8, he demonstrates exceptional physical strength, especially by carrying a calf on his shoulders. In 1878, when his family immigrated to Lowell, Massachusetts, he calls himself Louis to facilitate the English pronunciation.
