History and origin of the Cotte family

Jean Coste (Cotte/Cote) would be from Mortagne-au-Perche, Orne, Lower Normandy, France. Of unknown parentage, he married Anne Martin, daughter of Galeran Martin, on November 17th, 1635 in Quebec City. From their union were born eight children. He arrived in 1635, as one of the first inhabitants of the country. He settled down in Beauport, where he received several land and yields: 3 acres in Beauport, 1 acre front on Grande-Allée which he sold 300 pounds, 150 feet by 60 feet at the Upper Town of Quebec, estimated at 450 pounds, which he sold 300 pounds to his son (husband of Simone). He died at Beauport on March 27th, 1661.

COSTÉ-CÔTÉ - Several possible origins, the first refers to someone who lives on the top of a hill and the second is derived from the nickname associated to somebody who makes the coat - sort of garment like chainmail. Known variants: COSTE, COTTE, CÔTÉ and COSTÉ.
