Obituary of William A. Waldron

William Augustus Waldron of Haverford, Pa., formerly of Wayland and Cambridge, a longtime Boston lawyer and public official, died April 29 at his home. He was 95. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., Mr. Waldron lived in New York City and Washington, D.C., before settling in the Boston area. He lived in Wayland and Cambridge before moving to Haverford eight years ago. He graduated from The Taft School and Union College before receiving degrees in political economy and law from Harvard University. Mr. Waldron served on the staffs of the New York State Assembly and Constitutional Convention in 1938. During World War II, he worked for the National War Labor Board. In 1953, he succeeded Massachusetts Rep. Thomas H. Eliot as executive director of the Massachusetts Special Commission on the Structure of State Government. Mr. Waldron later served under Gov. Endicott Peabody as commissioner of administration, as well as special assistant attorney general and special counsel to the Committee on Rules of the House of Representatives. In 1975, he was hired to manage the legal affairs of Massachusetts General Hospital as its first full-time general counsel. He retired in 1981. He was a trustee of Union College, the Edmund Niles Huyck Foundation of Rensselaerville, N.Y., and The Taft School. He was chairman of the Wayland School Committee. Husband of the late Sybil Jay Kinnicutt, Mr. Waldron is survived by his former wife, Gertude L. (Nelson) of Chestnut Hill; a son, Arthur N. of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; a daughter, Dorothy W. of Wellesley; a sister, Jessica N. Spacil of Seattle; two stepdaughters, Sybil K. Baldwin of Rhinecliff, N.Y., and May K. Houghton of Corning, N.Y.; and two grandsons. A private service will be held at a later date.
