Obituary of Walter Matthies


MATTHIES, Walter KennethMarch 31, 1945 – Rabbit Lake, SKOctober 21, 2016 – Calgary, ABWalt "Akela" Matthies passed away peacefully at Rockyview General Hospital at 2:40 a.m. on Friday, October 21, 2016 at the age of 71. Walt will be remembered for his 35 years of leadership in Scouting, where he made a difference in the lives of the many youth of the 170th and other Cub Scout troops over the years, and for his 24 years of organizing the Popcorn Fundraising Campaign. He will be dearly missed by the Bonavista Downs Community Association, where he also volunteered tirelessly for 21 years. Walt was a mechanic and co-owner of South Trail Shell on Macleod Trail for 33 years; his many loyal customers always appreciated his honesty and expertise. Walt enjoyed skiing, hiking, camping, computers, baking Christmas cookies, and making his famous homemade borscht. He will also be remembered for his patience, curiosity, tenacity, work ethic, sense of humour, and above all, his kindness. Despite all the various activities and tasks he took on, he always took the time to stop and chat, take an interest, help someone in need, "smell the flowers". Walt will be remembered as being a beloved husband to Gayle; a loving father to Darren (Renee) of Kyoto, Japan and Roxanne (Sheldon) Brackenbury of Airdrie; a stepfather to Jim Heil of Calgary and the late Stacey Heil; and a dear grandpa to Alexander Matthies and Melissa Heil. He is survived by his sister Mary MacDonald of Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan, his sister-in-law Rachel Matthies of Saskatoon, and sisters-in-law Betty Lindsay (David) and Judy Knibb (Roy) of Ontario. Walt was predeceased by his brother Henry and brother-in-law John. He will be fondly remembered and missed by his many nieces and nephews.
