Virginia M. (Whelan) Carroll, of Weymouth, passed away Nov. 15, 2011, at the age of 90. Virginia was born and raised in Hingham, graduating from Hingham High School in 1939. She was a bookkeeper prior to raising her family and later became a clerk for the Postal Service in Boston for 20 years. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading and crossword puzzles. Virginia was an avid fan of all Boston Sports' teams, as well as an amazing cook whose recipes have been passed down to family and friends over the years. Beloved wife of the late James Carroll and devoted mother of Richard A. Carroll and his wife Wendy of Vero Beach, FL, Ann M. Stone of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Judith A. McCarthy and her husband James of Hyannis, MA, Virginia M. Gibbs and her husband David of Dacula, GA, James E. Carroll of Weymouth, and Joan M. Hennessy and her husband James of Weymouth. Loving sister of the late Eileen Whelan, Mary Rankin, James Whelan, and David Whelan. Cherished Grandma of 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the McDonald Funeral Home, North Weymouth at 40 Sea St., (off Rte. 3A-Bicknell Square), Saturday at 10 a.m. Funeral Mass to follow in Immaculate Conception Church, Weymouth at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in Old North Cemetery, Weymouth. In lieu of flowers, donations in Virginia's memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, 434 Rte. 134, Suite D-3, South Dennis, MA 02660.
