Obituary of Mary L. Haggerty

Mary Louise Haggerty, 93, of Norfolk, Massachusetts, formerly of Scranton, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at the Medway County Manor, Medway, Massachusetts on July 4, 2013. Her husband, John J. Haggerty died November 20, 2000. They were married 52 years. Born in Scranton on July 18, 1919, she was the daughter of the late attorney James D. and Regina Kelley Jordan. She attended St. Paul's High School in Scranton and was the salutatorian of her 1938 graduating class. She was an accomplished pianist in her youth and played the organ at her parish church. She earned a bachelor's degree in education at Marywood College, Scranton, in 1942 and taught at high schools in Paulsboro and Elizabeth, New Jersey, before retuning to Pennsylvania prior to her 1948 marriage. Later she taught at elementary schools and special education classes in northeastern Pennsylvania. She was a 50-year member of St. Clare Church, Scranton, and was active in its societies. She was an avid bridge player and a member of several religious and civic societies in Pennsylvania. Currently, she was a member of St. Jude Church in Norfolk. She lived for more than 23 years after undergoing open heart surgery in 1990. Mary Louise's even temperament, steady as she goes manner, served her well throughout her life; particularly when she moved from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts in 2006 to live with family members. She was a blessing to all who knew her. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, attorney Mary Catherine and Jonathan E. Hubbard of Norfolk, Mass; a son and daughter-in- law, James G. and Eileen G. Haggerty; of Dunmore, Pa.; two granddaughters, Julia L. Haggerty and Clare G. Haggerty also of Dunmore, nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a brother, attorney Richard J. Jordan, five sisters-in- law, Mary M. Jordan, Catherine M. Davis, Mae A. Burke, Beatrice P. Crasner and Anne Haggerty and one brother-in-law, Joseph Fallon, Sr. The family would like to acknowledge the entire staff of Medway Country Manor for the care and kindness they extended to Mary Louise during her residence there. The family is also deeply grateful to Christine Maguire for her devotion and care of Mary Louise the past four years. Memorial contributions in Mary Louise's memory may be made to: Residents Activity Fund, c/o Medway Country Manor, 115 Holliston Street, Medway, MA 02053. A funeral mass and burial were conducted in Pennsylvania.
