Obituary of Helen-Mitchell Keating

HAIGHT, Helen Mitchell Helen Haight (nee Keating) passed away peacefully and yet unexpectedly at home on Friday, September 7, 2007. Helen will be forever missed by her husband of fifty-five years, William and her children Tim, and his wife Gail of Calgary; Tom and his wife Annette of Eganville and Laura and her husband Ken Corbett of Kincardine. She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Peter and Kristin Haight and Mitchell and Samuel Corbett. Helen was born on May 27, 1927 in Edinburgh, Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1932 after the death of her father. She spent her childhood in Galt, Ontario and attended McMaster University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1949. After graduation she began her teaching career in Aylmer, Ontario. It was in Aylmer that she succumbed to the persistent wooing of Bill, finally giving in and marrying him in 1952. They moved shortly thereafter to St. Thomas to begin their married life. As with many of her generation Helen took a break from the regular work world to raise her children. Never one to be fulfilled by practicing the domestic arts, she immersed herself in many volunteer and sundry activities. Hers was a life well lived. One that included, hosting extravagant costume parties, travelling the world with Bill, becoming a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute, obtaining her pilot's wings, and being awarded the Companion of the Order of St. John. She was a voracious reader, an aspiring but not quite adept gardener and a lover of dogs. Most of all she was a woman who was passionate about making sure that her children and grandchildren were exposed to as many different experiences as possible. Visitation with the family will occur at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, Ontario, on Tuesday evening, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Service to celebrate Helen's life will be held at St. George's Roman Catholic Church, 1164 Commissioners Road West, London, Ontario, on Wednesday, September 12 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Thomas-Elgin Art Gallery or the charity of one's choice. Thanks for sending us to camp Mom! Published in the Calgary Herald on 9/10/2007
