Obituary of George-James Karry


KARRY, George James, Q.C. "He served his generation well." 87 years, on Sunday, October 31, 2004 at Leamington District Memorial Hospital. Loving father of James T. Karry (Elizabeth), Janet E. Karry, John H. Karry (LouAnn); loving friend of Roberta Milnes; remembered with love by grandchildren, Liam, Eilis, Adam and Tyler, and several nieces and nephews; faithful canine companions, Addie and Ruby (deceased). Son of James T. and Josephine Karry (deceased); brother of Theodore (1945) and Helen Brocklebank (2002). George graduated from North Toronto Collegiate in 1936; University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 1940; Osgoode Hall in 1943, and was called to the Bar that same year. Considered a good athlete by his peers, he was an expert billiard player and Snooker Champion of the University of Toronto. He began the practice in law in Kingsville after being called to the Bar, and continued until his retirement in 2001. He was appointed to Queen's Council in 1957. Over the years he served his community well. He was the Charter President of the Kingsville Amateur Athletic Association; Past Chairman of the Kingsville Separate School Board; Past Chairman of Kingsville District High School Board; Past President of the Kingsville Chamber of Commerce; Past President of the Kingsville Lions Club; and Past President of the Kingsville Golf and Country Club. He also served his profession in a number of capacities and was Past President of the South Essex Bar Association. He was also an Honourary Life Member of the Essex Law Association, Honourary Life Member of the Canadian Bar 02/1Association; Honourary Life Member of the Essex Bar Association; and Honourary Life Member of the Canadian Bar Association. George is remembered for his sense of humour, love of golfing, horse racing, antiquing, traveling and great storytelling. His grandchildren are still convinced there are lions and tigers and elephants among the trees and bushes at the back of his property. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation and a private family graveside service on Thursday, November 4th. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society. Arrangements entrusted to the C. Stuart Sykes Funeral Home, Kingsville. Published in the Windsor Star on 11/2/2004.
