Obituary of Elinor M. Bill

Elinor M. Bill, 89, of West Yarmouth, died peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, surrounded by her family, at Eagle Pond Rehabilitation & Living Center of South Dennis. Elinor was the daughter of John and Rose Mitchell of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, and Hyannis. She was the adored wife of William O. Bill. Elinor leaves two loving daughters, Pamela King and her husband, Jack Giusti, of Plymouth, and Patricia Methot and her husband, Matthieu Methot, of Worcester, along with her loving son, Douglas Bill of Hyannis. She leaves her cherished grandchildren, Elinor, Christopher, Adam, Jonathan and Kelsey. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Jean Mitchell of Hyannis; many nephews, niece and great-grandchildren. Elinor was born in Biddeford, Maine, on May 14, 1922. Elinor spent her childhood in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, and Avon. She was a graduate of Old Orchard Beach High School, where she enjoyed playing on the girl's basketball team. It was in high school Elinor learned to perfect her sewing skills. After graduation and just prior to WWII, Elinor moved to Boston with girlfriends and became a secretary to two Army colonels. She loved living in Boston, even though the love of her life, William, was in the Navy overseas. When William returned home, four years later, they were married at St. Margaret's Church in Old Orchard Beach. William and Elinor were married for 65 years. They moved to the Cape, joining her relatives in the late 1940s. There, in West Yarmouth, they raised their three children, Doug, Pam and Patty. Elinor became a champion civic leader starting with the Hyannis Park Civic Association with a few neighbors. She worked on transforming the Bay View Street Beach from disrepair to the wonderful public beach it is today. She frequently spoke at town meetings, pointing out the importance of keeping the beach and waterfront accessible to all. Elinor thoroughly enjoyed the sport of figure skating with her daughter, Patty. Elinor and William owned and operated Windswept Cottages, Crossroad Apartments and Bill's Sheet Metal Shop, all of Hyannis. Elinor was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church of Hyannis for 60 years and a member of the Women's Guild. More recently, Elinor received communion both at home and in the nursing home. The family would like to thank the staff of Eagle Pond for the loving care of Elinor during the last year of her life. Their love and support will never be forgotten. Visiting hours were Monday, Feb. 13, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road, (Rte. 28), Marstons Mills. A funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m., at St. Francis Xavier Church, 347 South St., Hyannis. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Elinor's memory may be made to Beacon Hospice, 1259 Willow St., Unit 2, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.
