Obituary of Edward Malins

MALINS, Edward MiddlemoreEdward "Ted" was an Englishman by birth, a Canadian citizen for nearly 50 years, husband to his beloved wife Fiona who passed away in 2009. He lived and worked in Montreal most of his life. Ted was born and raised in Worcestershire, England. He was the third child in a family of six. His parents were both doctors, his father being Medical Director of Birmingham University Medical School. He attended Shrewsbury School, one of the premier public schools in England, and Birmingham University, training as a Civil Engineer. It was at University where he met Fiona and they married in 1968. In 1969 they immigrated to Canada, where in those days opportunities for Engineers were much greater. They lived in Toronto, but very soon his first job brought him to Quebec, first to Trois Rivières and later Montreal. He completed his masters in Civil Engineering at McGill University. He worked at SNC Lavalin and then with Felix Kraus in the Descal Group where he became a partner and then sole proprietor of Kraus Malins Associates. During his career, he was responsible for the engineering work for many of the buildings in a thriving Montreal. Ted''s encroaching illness made it necessary to retire from work in 2004. He and Fiona were original residents of Vieux Montréal, in Cours de Royer in 1977. They also had cottages near Sutton, where they spent most weekends and holidays skiing and walking together in the mountains. They were both very involved in the development of Vieux Montréal, being committee members of the Residents of Vieux Montréal. Following Fiona''s death in 2009, Ted, due to illness, lived for the last 6 years in residential care in Vaudreuil, where he passed away November 5, 2016, age 70. He leaves behind a brother, David; and two sisters, Philippa and Jan; many nieces and nephews in the UK; and sister-in-law, Julie and nephew in Fiji. Special thanks to the care given by Katrina, Debbie and Hristo and close friend Trevor Smith. Ted''s kindness, smiles, calm affability and deep lingering laugh will be remembered by us all. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 2, 2016 in St. Mary''s Anglican Church, 261 Main Road, Hudson, QC J0P 1H0. Gifts made in Ted''s memory to Vaudreuil-Soulanges Palliative Care Residence, 90 Como Gardens, Hudson, QC J0P 1H0 (www.canadahelps.org/ dn/15276) would be gratefully acknowledged by his family.
