Obituary of Bruce-A. McFarlane

McFARLANE, Bruce A. Professor Emeritus B.A., M.A., Ph.D., LL.D. (January 5, 1921 - September 9, 2004) On the last day of a glorious vacation with Connie, following a sublime late summer meal, enjoying a perfect sunset over the pines and the lake, Bruce laid himself down and died. Born in Montreal in 1921 he came of age during the Great Depression. In 1939, he left with the RCAF to return in 1944, the only one of his cherished childhood gang to make it home. Granted a second chance at adolescence, he did not waste it. His tuition costs being paid for by the Department of Veterans Affairs, he studied at McGill University where he completed his B.A. and M.A. in Sociology. It was at McGill, that he met Connie Young, who would become his wife and life-long companion. Bruce and Connie left for London in 1957, where they spent 2 stimulating years while he completed his Ph.D at the London School of Economics (LSE). When a position opened at the newly formed Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton University, they chose to forego international opportunities in favour of a life in Ottawa, Canada. There, they actively pursued their respective careers, raised two boys, David and Brian, saw them both out into the world and enjoyed many happy years. Bruce and Connie continued to travel extensively, fete through the night and maintained a much-loved residence off the Intercoastal Waterway in Sarasota, Florida. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Connie of Ottawa, his sons David (Sonia Poisson) and Brian and his grandson Theodore all of Montreal. He is also survived by his sister Norma (Claude Reiss) of Lennoxville, Que., his sister-in-law Isabel McFarlane of Toronto as well as his much loved nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends. He was predeceased by his brothers Dr. Douglas McFarlane of Toronto and Rev. Alan McFarlane of London, England. His happy "Hello"!, his kind presence and smile, his love of life, boundless energy and unending generosity will be sorely missed. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday September 18th at 2:00 p.m. on the Campus of Carleton University, at the Alumni Theatre, Southam Hall.
