William Whiteside, 88, of Meriden, died Jan. 17, 2009 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut at Bradley Memorial after a short illness. He was the husband of Shirley (Prescher) Whiteside for 39 years. Born July 20, 1920 in Marmaton, Kansas to the late William and Mabel (Bollinger) Whiteside, he lived in Meriden since 1998. He retired from Kaman Aerospace in 1985, where he worked as an engineer in California and Connecticut. He also managed Whiteside IGA in Ft. Scott, Kansas as a young man. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by three sons and their wives, Bill Whiteside Jr. and Patty, of California, Dennis and Diane Whiteside, of Bristol and Charles and Adrianne Whiteside, of Southington; one daughter and her husband, Cathy and Les Sobel, of California and two stepchildren, Tom Prescher and his wife, MaryLou and Don Prescher; seven grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Plantsville Memorial Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. Burial, with full military honors, will be at the convenience of the family in South End Cemetery.
