LOUISVILLE, Ga. - Mr. William (Bill) Harold Newberry Sr., age 91, of Highway 24 East, died Wednesday evening September 12, 2012 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, September 15th, in the Louisville United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Louisville City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: John Newberry, Robert Newberry, Daniel Newberry, Christopher Currie, Andrew Currie, Jamie Swindle, Mark Swindle, Alan Fletcher, Tyler Nicholson, & Carmine Palumbo. A native of Lizella, Georgia, Bill was the son of the late Samuel Watson and Louise Moore Newberry. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and later earned a commission as a Second Lieutenant, served in the European Theater in WWII, receiving a EAME medal, bronze service star and a good conduct medal. In January of 1947, he married Mary Katherine Peters Newberry, and they moved to Louisville in 1949 when Bill began farming. In 1956, Bill was elected to the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank Association, and after three years, began working as president of the organization. He was elected to the Jefferson EMC board of directors in 1976 and was a founding member of Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Louisville. Mr. Newberry was preceded in death by his parents Samuel Watson and Louise Moore Newberry, wife Mary K. Pete Newberry, a daughter Mary Kaye Newberry, brothers S. Lloyd Newberry, Louie R. Newberry, sister Mary Katherine Johnson, and is survived by children William H. & Margaret Newberry, Jr., Richard J. Newberry, Stephen G. & Tina Newberry all of Louisville, Sheryl & John McManus of Atlanta, and Jeanne & Buck Swindle of Carrolton, 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and several nieces & nephews. The Newberry family may be contacted at the residence, 5154 Highway 24 East, Louisville, and will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. John of Arc Catholic Church, 2604 Highway 1 North Louisville, GA 30434, or the Jefferson Hospital Foundation, 1067 Peachtree Street # 105, Louisville, GA 30434.
