DARLINGTON, William Ralph Born October 29, 1922 – October 3, 2013 Ralph passed away peacefully on the morning of October 3 at George Derby Centre in Burnaby where he had lived for 3 years. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years Mary Lou, and daughters Penny Anderson, and Sharon Darlington. He leaves behind two granddaughters Kelly, and Amanda and 5 great-grandchildren, Abrielle, Dryden, Ethan, Ella and Allana, and also Mary Lou's sister June. Ralph grew up during the Depression in Vancouver, and in 1941 joined the Royal Air Force to be sent overseas. He spent almost 4 years in the UK, returning to Canada in February of 1945. His first position back in Canada was that of a police Constable with the City of Vancouver. Ralph would often tell his stories of being a new constable on "the beat" in Vancouver. In 1947 he was hired by the Province of BC for the position of fireman with UBC Fire Department. He spent the next 36 years as a career fireman and retired in 1982 as Assistant Chief. He loved to umpire baseball games in his younger days, fishing of all kinds, vacations at Sechelt, gardening and also played a game or two of cards! Very special thank you to Dr. Froese and all staff at George Derby Centre for making these last few years so enjoyable for him. A Celebration of Ralph's Life will be held on dad's birthday, October 29, 2013 at 1:00pm at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, 14831 - 28 Avenue, Surrey, BC. He would have been 91. Ralph was the last remaining sibling of the Darlington family of 5 children. In lieu of flowers, a donation to George Derby Centre for Veterans, or the Vancouver Fire Dept. Burn Unit is greatly appreciated. Rest in Peace Nigel Buck Hammersmoke. Condolences may be offered at www.victoryfuneralcentre.ca
