LOWELL-Sarah Frances Ross Carpenter, 61, of the Highlands section of Lowell, a teacher of languages and literacy, died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 14 at her home, after a long battle with cancer.She was the wife of Michael J. Carpenter.Born in Chicago, Ill., Jan. 17, 1943, the daughter of the late Donald K. and the late Margery (Strain) Ross, she was raised in Pasadena, Calif., and attended Pasadena schools. She attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., where she received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in English.In August 2004, Mrs. Carpenter received her Doctorate in Languages and Literacy, also from Purdue University.Mrs. Carpenter was a homemaker and taught languages and literacy at Nuestra Senora del Carmen Church.Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Janet Manry of Houston, Texas, Margaret Pickard and her husband, Timothy of Spring Lake, Mich., and Catherine Davis of Boswell, Ind.; a son, Charles E. Manry II and his fiancŽe, Jennifer Goosens of Burlington, Mass.; four grandchildren, Leslie Manry of Little Rock, Ark., Charlotte Pickard of Spring Lake, Mich., and Morgan and Konlan Davis, both of Medaryville, Ind.; also a brother and sister-in-law, Simon Bruce Ross and his wife, Margaret Jo of Ann Arbor, Mich.
