Ruth I. "Tia" Shepherd, 99, died Sunday evening, July 9, 2006, at her home. Born in Hazleton, Pa., she was an educator for 40 years prior to retiring and moving to Landrum more than 20 years ago. She was a teacher in Kingston, Pa., Puerto Rico and Caldwell, N.J. After teaching in Puerto Rico, she was fondly known there as "Tia" Ruth Shepherd. She was predeceased by a brother, George E. Shepherd of Allentown, Pa.; and a sister, Mildred L. Salinas of Hendersonville, N.C. She is survived by her faithful caregiver, Malorie Wilkerson; a brother, Richard W. Shepherd of Scotch Plains, N.J.; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Shepherd of Allentown, Pa.; two nieces; and a great-niece. Private services and interment will be held at Fern Knoll Cemetery, Dallas, Pa., in the Shepherd family plot. A memorial service will be held at Tryon Congregational Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tryon Congregational Church, P.O. Box 1367, Tryon, NC 28782.
