Roy Arthur Matthews, 77, Seymour, passed away at 5:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at Covered Bridge Health Campus, Seymour.Mr. Matthews was a member of First Baptist Church, Seymour, where he was actively involved, having been a member of the counting committee, nominating committee and board of education and was chairman of the trustees, Sunday school superintendent and a choir member. He served in the U.S. Army for one year, where he was a member of the Rangers (paratroopers). He retired after 20 years from the U.S. Air Force. He was then employed in telecommunications with Contel for 19 years. He graduated from high school in Springfield, Vt., in 1950, and went on to receive his associate degree in business management from Indiana University-Purdue University in Versailles and from Purdue in 1998. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925 and American Legion Post 89. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a clown through Giggles and More. He also bowled on the Super 50 League and many other leagues.Born Oct. 18, 1932, in Windsor, Vt., he was the son of Clifford and Marjorie Bartlett Matthews, both of whom preceded him in death. On April 25, 1982, at First Baptist Church, he married Carol Pulliam, who survives.Besides his wife, he is survived by ex-wives, Mary Rye and Sandy Staley; children, Diane (Donald) Matthews, Danny Matthews, Jeff Bryan, Thomas (Bonnie) Farace, John (Nancy) Farace, Ronald (Shelly) Farace and Renee' (Ric) Decker; sisters, Priscilla (Harry) DeLong, Beverly (Bob) Hobbs, Rosemarie Carr and Ginger (Richard) Lowell; brother-in-law, Harley Wade; grandchildren, Millie Espinda, Alika Espinda, Alvin Espinda, Donnie Rogers II, Sara Lee Matthews, Stephanie Johns, Dustin Bryan, Heidi Pane, John Farace Jr., Elizabeth Farace, Christina Farace, Britni Farace, Joseph Farace and Aniah Decker; and his mother-in-law, Donna J. Pulliam.He was preceded in death by his daughter, Terri Johns; infant brother, Guy Matthews; sister, Betty Wade; and ex-wife, Darlene Bryan.The Rev. Larry Tingle will conduct a celebration service of Roy's life at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Voss Chapel, Seymour. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Seymour, with full military graveside rites conducted. There will be a Voss dove release.Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church, Seymour.www.vossfuneralservice.com
