->Robert P. "Bob" Close, age 84, lifetime resident of Lodi, died at his home on Monday (Dec. 27) following an extended illness. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 31) at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 So. Main Street, Ovid. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 1), officiated by Rev. Diane Walker of the Ovid Federated Church. Bob was born in Lodi on October 22, 1926, the only son of the late Marion D. "Pete" and Clara E. (Austin) Close. He attended the Lodi School and graduated from Ovid Central High School in 1944. He joined the US Navy in 1945, and proudly served during WWII. On April 1, 1948 he purchased Quality Oil Co. from his father, and it was renamed Close Oil Company, which he and his family operated until 1989. He was an active volunteer and a 65 year member of the Lodi Fire Dept., a 65 year member of the American Legion Post #463 in Ovid, a life member of both the South Seneca and Interlaken Sportsmen's Clubs, and a former member of the Lodi Grange and Odd Fellows Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gloria; a daughter, Darlene J. Ahouse of Trumansburg; a son, David (Sue) Close of Lodi; and grandchildren, Stephen and Jill Ahouse, Kari (Jonathan) Blake, Jennifer and Kevin Close; cousins, Jean Grace, Roger Austin and Carol Voorhees; and several nieces and nephews.
