Hammond, Robert "Rob" SLINGERLANDS Robert "Bob" Hammond passed away at the Beverwyck Independent Living Facility on the evening of July 2, 2014 after a period of declining health. He was 98 years old. Bob was born in Albany on December 23, 1915, the son of Herman Hammond and Bessie (Danzig) Hammond. He graduated from Albany High School where he excelled in football and diving and then attended the Manlius School on a football scholarship. On November 10, 1940 he married Ruth Louise Brin in Albany. They remained married till Ruth's death in 1992. During World War II Bob served in the Army Air Corp as a meteorologist and landed in Europe on D-Day. Robert was the manager and owner of Brin's Department Store that had been founded some years before by his mother-in-law, Bessie Brin. Until the closing of Brin's in 1990 he was a beloved fixture of the Delaware Avenue community. Bob and Ruth lived all of their adult lives in Delmar. He enjoyed participating in recreational sports throughout his life and was an avid bowler and golfer. He enjoyed travel and traveled widely after his retirement. He was a loyal and loving role model to his family and friends. The next phase of Bob's life was spent with his beloved Esther Margolius. Bob cherished Esther, her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. They brought him great joy and constant support through out the years. Robert is predeceased by his three older siblings, Ann Rosenberg, Aaron Hammond and Maurice Hammond. He is survived by his son, Dr. Denis Hammond and his wife Sheryl Hammond of Bedford N.H.; and their children, Dr. Justine Hammond of Phoenix and Nicholas Hammond of Bedford. Robert is also survived by his daughter, Marla Val (Hammond) Robinson of Leroy and her three children, April Zabel, Clifford Zabel and Waylon Robinson. Services will be held at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave., Albany on Sunday July 6, 2014 at 11 am. Interment will be at the Jewish People's Cemetery, Tricentennial Dr., Albany immediately following the service. No flowers please.
