ROY EDWIN MCMAHON GREEN VALLEY, AZ - Roy Edwin McMahon died on Dec. 12, 2009, at home in Green Valley, Ariz. Roy was born in Bristol Connecticut on March 22, 1930, to Roy McMahon and Ruth Benton McMahon and moved to Vermont at the age of 14 to live with his surrogate parents, Delbert and Helen McMahon. Roy was predeceased by both sets of parents, mother and father-in-law Persus and Arlene Monteith, brother inlaw Percy Monteith, in-laws Eltha and Carl Morgan and Clara and Keeley Backus, and son-in-law Tom Knight, several cousins and aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife Martha, son Jeffrey, daughters Wendy Knight, Darla Goodrich and Shelley Trevithick. Grand children Ian, Tyler, Lee, Nicole, Kalif, Jared, Sam, John, Andrew, Jason and Rachel; Great grandchildren Jayden and Aliana, sisters Joyce Wasson and Jean O'Brien (Terry), sister-in-law Pierrette Monteith. Several nieces and nephews, special friends George and Pam Starbuck. Roy graduated from BFA, St. Albans, where he played football with his pals (known as the 4 horseman), graduated from Becker Jr. College and joined the Navy in 1951. After four years in the Navy and a world cruise on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, Roy returned to Vermont. He graduated from UVM with a BS in Business Administration. There he met his wife of 52 years, Martha Monteith. After graduation Roy went to work as an auditor for Western Union, later became an IRS agent and then an internal auditor for IBM, retiring in 1991, after 29 years of service. While employed with IBM, he attended classes to become a certified Internal Auditor. He was a founding member of Essex Rescue and a certified EMT as well as coaching little league and youth hockey. He loved to go duck hunting with his buddy, George along with their sons, Jeff and Mike and dogs, Duchess and Princess and enjoyed playing poker with his friends from IRS. Shortly after retirement, Roy and Martha moved to Green Valley, Ariz. where he became an avid shuffle board player, a team captain and an officer in the league. Roy also volunteered to work on the Senior Games. There will be a birthday celebration of Roy's life on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at his home in Green Valley, Ariz. Roy's wish is to have his son Jeff and his buddy, George, scatter his ashes over their hunting grounds on Lake Champlain in Vermont.
