Michael Altieri of West Bridgewater passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the age of 76. Beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and friend, Mike is survived by Valerie Altieri, his loving wife of 51 years; his children, Anthony Altieri of West Palm Beach, Fla., Christine Altieri and her husband Victor Palmieri of West Bridgewater and Michael Altieri and Kathleen Schifino of Middleboro; and his four grandchildren, U.S. Marine Cpl. Jesse Michael Palmieri and his wife Erin Palmieri, Alexandria Palmieri, Michaela Altieri and Alexander Altieri; and his nieces, Liz Sloan and Tracy Sheehan. Mike was born in Brockton, attended Brockton schools, and graduated from Brockton High School, where he made many lifelong friends, in 1955. He played football for the school, and later continued on to play for Northeastern University and local semi-pro teams. Mike had served proudly in the United States Army for three years during the Korean conflict, where he gained his love and respect for veterans and their causes. In 1962, Mike married Valerie, and found in her a best friend, a loving wife, and a doting companion. Mike went on to become a business contractor specializing in construction, and built custom homes, commercial buildings, roads, and everything in between. Mike was best known for his quick wit, great sense of humor, and compassion for others, and had gained the love and respect of his peers. He spent many hours playing with, singing to, and being a best friend for his grandchildren. He was actively involved in all family activities, and delighted in taking family vacations and attending family outings. Mike was an avid conversationalist, and enjoyed spending time with friends over coffee at Whites Bakery and Cafe, Reids Ultimate Breakfast, and at Dunkin Donuts. He was also a golf enthusiast, and spent many a morning at the D.W. Field Memorial Golf Course or River Bend Golf Course, as well as travelling to play many different courses across the country, from the Grand Canyon to Myrtle Beach. Mike shared his love of golf with his children, and was a gentle, patient coach on the green. His melodious laugh, his impish grin, and bear hugs will be greatly missed by all those that know and love him. A private graveside service was held to celebrate his life and accomplishments. Arrangements made by the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, www.Russellpicafuneralhome.com.
