MARY ANNA (HERON) MARTEL - BURLINGTON - Mary Anna (Heron) Martel, 83, of Burlington, passed away peacefully at her home on July 11, 2014. Mary was born in Burlington to the late Frank and Grace (Couture) Heron on Nov. 6, 1930. Mary was a graduate of Burlington High School in 1950, and later from Shepard-Gill School of Nursing in 1952. Mary went on to work for Mass General, Boston, Mass., for five years, and for a short period of time she acted as a nurse for the Boston Red Sox. Mary then left Boston and moved back to Vermont. Mary married her husband, Norman J. Martel, on Oct. 27, 1962. She worked at Mary Fletcher Hospital in the ER and on Patrick 4 for 10 years; and Birchwood Nursing and Rehabilitation for 35 years, before retiring in 2002 at the age of 72. In her free time, Mary enjoyed traveling and went on many cruises. Mary also loved to cook; she made meals for the poor, and baked the best apple pie ever. Mary was a member of Saint Mark's Church in Burlington, and had the pleasure of helping them in many different manners. Mary was a resident of the New North End for the last 51 years. She was predeceased by her parents; and her husband, Norman. Mary leaves five children, Darlene Thomas and husband, Arthur, of Burlington, Tim Martel and wife, Elizabeth, of Westford, Virginia Kerrigan and husband, James, of Burlington, Ron Martel and wife, Stacy, of Colchester, and Marybeth Martel and partner, Adrienne Kane, of Windham, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog, Oliver. Mary also leaves behind a brother, William Heron and wife, Marge, of Essex; two sisters, Dorothy Walker and husband, Bob, of Burlington, and Sister Virginia Heron of the Presentation of Mary, Methuen, Mass.; and two very special aunts, Doris Dugmore and Marjorie Heron of England. The family would like to thank Fletcher Allen Health Care for all their hard work and dedication, especially the palliative care team and the VNA services. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, July 14, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Colchester, with burial to follow in New Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
