Marion A. Doyle, 97FALMOUTH - Marion Armstrong Doyle, 97, of 3 Shady Lane, Falmouth, died Monday, January 12, 2015, at Gosnell Hospice following a brief illness.Born in Cape Elizabeth on May 23, 1917 in her family's home on Shore Road where her father and her grandfather were also born. The home was on the original King's Land Grant, which at one time comprised over 9000 acres. The boundaries went from the South Portland border to the end of Fort Williams and from the ocean to Mitchell Rd. She was the daughter of Robert E. and Elizabeth Fuller Armstrong, Sr.. Educated in local schools, she was a graduate of Cape Elizabeth High School Class of '35.Prior to her retirement she served as Deputy Register of Probate for Cumberland County and as a clerk in the Probate Court office for 17 years. With her friend and boss, Laura Waite, they started the Cumberland County Employees Credit Union in the early 1960's. She took the first loan for $25. That credit union is now the Cumberland County Credit Union. She then headed up the probate paralegal team at Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer and Nelson. She would often laugh about the complaint from the young lawyers that her office had a window and theirs did not. Judge Louis Bernstein, a partner at the time, told the junior associates that when they made as much money for the firm as Marion did they would get an office with a window also. After retiring for the second time she enjoyed working as a part-time teller at the Fleet Bank branch at the Pine Tree Shopping Center. At one point being the oldest employee in the entire Fleet Bank system. She took trips to Bermuda, Canada, and Florida but her greatest pleasure was being with her grandchildren and keeping up on what they were doing. She was always generous with her time and money when it came to her grandchildren. Marion was repaid many times over by their gratitude and all the time and devotion they gave back to her in her declining years. She often remarked to her friends how important the relationship with her grandchildren was to her throughout her whole life. She was especially proud of all the work that her grandson, Michael, put towards earning his Eagle rank for Boy Scouts. All through her life she was upbeat and always had a positive outlook. She spent many hours helping her friends by making meals and driving them to their doctor's appointments into her late eighties. She was always a hard worker and a loving parent to her only child Michael. Her older sisters Shirley and Ruth and her younger brother Robert Jr. and Robert's daughter Patricia predeceased her. Survivors include her son Michael of Falmouth; grandchildren, Alison Dara Doyle, of Hartford, Conn., Shannon Erin Doyle, of Pittsfield, Mass., and Michael Armstrong Doyle, of Boston. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She is very much missed and loved by her entire family. Finally, the Doyle family sends a special thank you to the staff and volunteers at Gosnell Hospice for their kind and gentle care provided to Marion in the last few days of her long and full life.
