PIKE, LEWIS WAYNE, PhD.Lewis Wayne Pike, Ph.D., of White Plains, New York, formerly of Washington, D.C., age 73, died April 11, 2005. He was a retired educational research psychologist. He received a B.A. in psychology from Cascade College, Portland, Oregon; a M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. During his 15 years at Educational Testing Service (ETS), he directed evaluation and improvement of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Dr. Pike validated the efficacy of short-term instruction to increase Standard Achievement Test (SAT) scores in math through test taking strategy and review of math fundamentals. While in Washington, D.C., he worked for 15 years for the Department of Education and the Fairfax, Virginia public schools as an educational research advisor. He served in the U. S. Navy with the rank Medical Corpsman, First Class during the Korean conflict. He loved hiking, music, and books. He is survived by his wife Jeanette Rehbock Pike of White Plains, and their two children, Margaret Jennifer Rehbock Pike of Washington, D.C. and Jonathan Luis Rehbock Pike of White Plains. He is also survived by his former wife Edith Pike and their children James Pike of Lawrenceville; Steven Pike and daughter-in-law Gloria Scher of White Plains; Daniel Pike and daughter-in-law Laura Boynton of Sudden Valley, Washington; and Denise Pike of Naperville, Illinois. He has five surviving grandchildren: Maciek Pike-Biegunski of Naperville, Illinois; Edith Pike-Biegunska of Fukushima, Japan; Kasia Pike-Biegunska of Phoenix, Arizona; and Gabriel and Robyn Pike of Sudden Valley, Washington. He is also survived by three sisters: Yvonne Cuellar, Norma Gavalar, and Ida Pearce. He was an active member and elder of the Church of the Pilgrims in Washington, D.C. Since moving to New York, he has been attending the Mamaroneck Methodist Church. Viewing will be Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at the Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Avenue at South Broadway White Plains, NY from 2 "" 4 pm and 7 "" 9 pm. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given in the form of donations in his memory to the Alzheimer's Research Association at 400 Morris Avenue, Suite 251, Denville, New Jersey or to the Church of the Pilgrim, 2201 P Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20037.
