Joseph J Steffen, Sr. - CHICAGO, IL - On Thursday January 24th, 2013 three days shy of his 82nd birthday Joseph J Steffen, Sr. passed into eternal rest. He was preceded in death by his older brother Edward Steffen and an infant daughter Gerilyn Marie. Joe Steffen was a lifelong resident of Chicago the son of a Southside Irish cop and was a devoted Chicago Bears and White Sox fan. He served his country in intelligence @ Ft Dix during the Korean War. He was a hard working old school Midwest fiscal conservative with a very big heart for his community and the catholic church serving meals on wheels well into his retirement years and volunteering at the Oakbrook Golf Course. He worked his way up from a lineman with Illinois Bell Telephone to a college degree in night school thru DePaul University (Chicago) to a mid-level executive job. Most of all, he was proud of his two sons and spent the last months of his life in Kansas City to be close to his youngest son's family there. Joseph J Steffen, Sr. had a wonderful sense of humor and intellect; his intellect making him an excellent recreational tennis player well into his 70s and his sense of humor served him well in his other passion for golf. He read extensively on history particularly on the Holy Land, was often a public speaker at civic functions and had an excellent singing voice which he displayed in community theatrical productions like Can Can and the Music Man. He took his oldest son to his first ballgame ( Chicago White Sox ) at age 3 and was a regular at his youngest son's football practices and games. He shared vacations to Arizona and the Bahamas with his adult sons continuing modest travel traditions he established for his then young family always pointing out History at places like the aviation museum in Dayton, the Smithsonian in Washington DC and Red Rock Amphitheatre in Colorado. He was even present for one of his son's first and only ( to date ) hole-in-one providing him great joy and envy. He is survived by an older sister Mary Steffen Hennessey of Palos Hills,Illinois and his two sons Joseph Jr. ( wife Janet ) of Savannah, Georgia and James Edward ( wife Elena ) of Lee's Summit, Missouri as well as 8 beloved grand-children: Dioris, Diorlena ( Savannah ) and Helen Natera, Julian, Amelie ( Savannah ), Elian, Liam ( Savannah ) and Elanor Steffen as well as grand-niece Dannybel Valerio. The family will hold a Memorial Service on Saturday February 9th at 11am Holy Sepulcher Church 6601 W 111th St Alsip, Ill. 60803. LiamsLand is a 501(3) charity funding research into Lymphatic Malformation a childhood disease his grandson Liam suffers from.
