December 2, 2007 John Thomas Deegan went home on December 2, 2007. Born on November 25, 1910, in Auburn, John was a graduate of Auburn Academic High School and Niagara University. He also attended Syracuse University. His first employment was for Standard Oil, but after a few years he began his career in corrections as a prison guard. Prior to WWII, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was awarded an opportunity to attend OCS at Princeton University. He was commissioned an ensign and was assigned to the Dolly Madison, a Merchant Marine vessel. He was discharged as lieutenant. After WWII, John continued his career and rose to the rank of warden at Sing Sing Prison and Auburn Correctional Facility. After retiring in 1970, John spent winters in Naples, Florida, with his brother, Sylvester, until Sylvester's death in 1982. John continued to winter in Florida until 2000. John was an avid reader and enjoyed sharing stories and his love of history with his many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas A. and Anna Flynn Deegan, and by a brother, Sylvester. A funeral Mass will be held 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's of the Lake, Skaneateles, with burial immediately following at St. Mary's Cemetery. Contributions may be made in John's memory to the Skaneateles Ambulance Volunteer Emergency Services, "SAVES." Arrangements by Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, Skaneateles.
