BENNETT, Bob John Robert Gordon (Bob) Bennett, husband of Mabel, of Ottawa, passed away on the 18th of January, 2006, at the age of 85 years. Bob was born to Gordon, a telegraph operator, and Claudia, a schoolteacher, in Thunder Bay, on the 18th of December, 1920, and was raised in villages throughout northwestern Ontario. He has two sisters: Jacqueline, now of Fullerton, California, and Patricia (married Graeme Consiglio) of Ottawa. Early schooling was in Winnipeg and Montreal West. After completing engineering at McGill in 1942, he engaged in defense research and development with the 3rd Canadian Signals Regiment in Ottawa. He completed a Masters in communication engineering at McGill, after the war. A full career of service to his country ensued, practiced with thoroughness, dedication, loyalty, fairness, and respect. He had a significant role in defending Canada's interests through the Cold War era. He married Mabel Simpson of Winnipeg, in 1946. Bob and Mabel built a new home in Rothwell Heights in 1957, and have lived there ever since. They raised 4 children there: John (and Janet), now of Bragg Creek, Alberta, Bill (and Colleen), of Winnipeg, Nancy (and Bill Marshall), of Calgary, and Jamie (Paula), of Toronto. Another child, Ann Claudia, died in 1951. Bob was involved with numerous neighbourhood activities, during the formative stages of a new community: his church (Rothwell United), cubs and scouts, little league baseball, planning and development of local recreational facilities, and urban planning issues. Bob was an outdoorsman who instilled in his family the desire to interact with Mother Nature, always with a deep reverence for her diverse treasures. He hiked and skied many trails, and canoed and swam in numerous lakes and streams. A member of the Rideau Trail Club, Bob shared his knowledge of the wilderness with all who ventured with him. Although separated by long distances, Bob kept in touch with all his grandchildren: Laura and Julia Bennett of Bragg Creek, Sarah and Liam Marshall of Calgary, and Madeleine and Silas Bennett of Toronto. Bob will always be in the hearts of those who knew him. A memorial service will be held at Rothwell United Church, 42 Sumac St., on Monday, 23 January, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the David Suzuki or Heart & Stroke Foundations.
