OATES JOHN (ÃŽJACKÃŽ) LAWSON March 2, 1928 January 7, 2008 With heavy hearts, the family of Jack Oates shares news of his passing on January 7, 2008 - in his ÃŽ80th yearÃŽ. Jack was predeceased by his wife Louise in 2002 and his brother Gordon Oates in 1986. He leaves behind daughters Tracey (Steve) and Alison (Ian); sons Randy and Monte; and seven grandchildren: Craig, Faye, Laura, Graeme, Bajan, India and Keane. Also left to mourn are his sister Wendy Fay, brother Ron Oates, a large extended family and many lifelong friends. Jack was born and raised in Vancouver, graduating from Lord Byng High School in 1945. A lifelong learner and ardent academic, he received his Bachelor of Arts and Masters degree in language from UBC. A proud achievement for Jack was returning to university at 40 to earn his law degree. When called to the bar in the early '70s, he was the only graduate with four teenagers wildly cheering his accomplishment. Much of his career was spent in the car business, as a partner in dealerships on the North Shore and as president of Lawson Oates on Broadway. The last 15 years of his career were spent as Executive Vice President of the Motor Dealers Association of BC. He retired in 1993. All who knew Jack admired his intellect. He was a voracious reader, with a particular passion for European history. His library is immense and his knowledge and curiosity vast. We all thought he would have made a wonderful college history professor, with his love of the subject and his talent for expressing ideas. When he wasn't reading, he enjoyed NFL football, soccer, British mysteries and lively debate. His greatest joy? Being ÃŽDadÃŽ to four children and ÃŽPapaÃŽ to seven grandchildren. Family was everything to him and we all knew we were loved deeply and unconditionally. Jack was truly a man of great character, decency and goodness. We will miss him beyond words. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Jack's name to the BC Cancer Foundation is appreciated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 12, 10:00 a.m. at Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver. Everyone welcome.
