The family moved to Tisdale in 1928, where Corporal Ives had homesteaded in 1904. As mayor, he negotiated for a 60-suite senior's high rise conveniently located near the community's business district. He later served for nine years on the board of the Tisdale Housing Authority administering these dwellings. When the Town of Tisdale wished to have its own flag, his redesign of the provincial entry won the competition, and now flys over Tisdale. In 1991, the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association awarded him its Scoop Lewry award for outstanding service to urban government; his community service was also recognized with award of the federal government's Canada 125 medal.
