John F. O'Brien 1917 - 2013 CHICOPEE - John F. "O'B" O'Brien, 95, of the Chicopee Falls section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Friday, February 1, 2013. He passed into Eternal Life at Willimansett Center West in Chicopee surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Holyoke on February 10, 1917, a beloved son of the late George and Mae (Hurley) O'Brien. He was raised and schooled in Holyoke and lived in the city for many years before moving to the Chicopee Falls section of Chicopee in 1961. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Gunners Mate Third Class. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Area aboard the USS Rangor and crossed the North Pole on the ship. Following his military service, he returned to Holyoke and was employed for over 40 years at the former A & P Warehouse on Plainfield Street in Springfield. O'B was a member of the Tiger's Athletic Club in Chicopee Falls and was often seen eating at his favorite hangout, the Copper Line Restaurant, in Chicopee Falls. He was a communicant of the former Saint Patrick Church in Chicopee Falls. He was predeceased by his loving son, Francis J. O'Brien who was Called Home on October 22, 1999. His late son, Francis, played professional football for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Washington Redskins and O'B remained a loyal Redskins fan for his entire life. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Sally (Macioszek) O'Brien who was Called Home on August 16, 2001. He leaves his loving daughter and son-in-law, Beverly A. Stepno and her husband, Craig of West Roxbury, MA; his four cherished grandchildren, Kelly Stepno, Eric Stepno and his wife, Melissa, Marty O'Brien and Lissa Vento; his two cherished great grandchildren; and several dear nephews and nieces. His funeral will be held on Friday, February 8, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with Military Honors will follow the Mass at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, Pittroff Avenue, South Hadley, MA 01075. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday morning, February 8, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. before the Mass.
