May 9, 2004 John D. "Chick" Meehan, died at home Sunday, May 9, 2004. He was born in Brooklyn January 9, 1917. A son of the late Dennis and Sarah Hayes Meehan. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He was a graduate of Syracuse University and an original member of the Syracuse Nationals, an early NBA Team. He was inducted into the Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. After graduating from college, he moved to Kerhonkson in 1952 and began his teaching career in the Rondout Valley area where he was fondly known by all as "Coach". He taught physical education, coached all sports and was Athletic Director. He was a founding parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Veteran of Foreign Wars. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Meehan of Elmont, NY, Julie Meehan of New York City, NY; two sons, John Meehan, Jr. of Syracuse, NY, Michael Meehan of Hilton Head, SC; six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Julia and a daughter, Denise. Funeral will be Thursday 9:30 a.m. at the H.B. Humiston Funeral Home, 30 Forty Second Street, Kerhonkson, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Kerhonkson. Burial will be in Fantinekill Cemetery, Ellenville, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kerhonkson-Accord First Aid Squad.
