January 20, 2005 Dr. John David Halverson, 63, of Manlius, passed away Thursday. Born in Owatonna, MN, he graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School in 1959. He graduated from Hamilton College and received his M.D. from SUNY Upstate. He did aresidency in general surgery at Washington University Medical School, St. Louis, prior to serving on its faculty. He was Professor of Surgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University the past 14 years. He was the director of the Bariatric Surgery Center. Retired January 1, Dr. Halverson was appointed Professor Emeritus of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Halverson was former president of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and was a member of many national and international professional associations. He was a member of DeWitt Community Church and the Cavalry Club. An annual teaching day has been established at Upstate Medical University in Dr. Halverson's name. In 2002, he was named to the F-M High School Hall of Distinction. He served in the Army Medical Corps at Kenner Army Hospital at Ft. Lee, VA. Survivors: his wife of 26 years, Petie Halverson; two daughters, Anne H. Halverson of Manlius and Julie C. (T.J.) Lynn of Overland Park, KS; two sons, Jim Halverson of Manlius and Dave Halverson of Oakland, CA; his mother, Julie R. Halverson of Columbus, GA; a brother, Dr. Stephen Halverson of Columbus, GA; three beloved granddaughters; and two nieces. Memorial Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday at DeWitt Community Church.
