VALLEY FALLS, N.Y. - James Connor McMahon, 65, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Canandaigua. He was born Dec. 13, 1948, in Troy, the son of Harold J. and Florence (Herlihy) McMahon. He was a graduate of Hoosic Valley Central School, where he played varsity basketball. He also graduated from LeMoyne College in Syracuse in 1970. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an ensign in the submarine division. He was an accountant and prepared federal tax returns for several businesses, including H&R Block. He contracted a mental illness and was hospitalized, and later spent more than 30 years at Bickford House in Macedon. Survivors include a brother, David McMahon of Lawrence, N.J.; a sister, Linda Meskun of Shaftsbury, Vt.; a niece and two nephews, four great-nephews and a great-niece. The funeral Mass will be celebrated from Transfiguration Church (formerly St. John's) in Schaghticoke, at a time to be announced in the spring. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Schaghticoke at that time. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Disabled American Veterans or Valley Falls Free Library, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
