Avis de décès de George-Burton Farris

Untitled GEORGE BURTON (POP) FARRIS 1914 - 2010 The remarkable life on Earth of George Burton (Pop) Farris, age 95, ended on March 31, 2010. He was born July 18, 1914 in East St. Louis, St. Clair County, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Hannah Smith Farris; brothers, Fred and Carl; sister, Delores; wife of 43 years, Stella Kuma Farris; and daughter, Patricia Farris Bardwell. He is survived by one brother, Robert Farris of Phoenix, Arizona; daughter, Nancy Farris Van Duyne Model (Mike) of Milton, Florida; son, George Burton Farris, II (Marsha) of Kokomo, Indiana; grandson, Kenneth Van Duyne of Los Angeles, California; granddaughters, Cara Bardwell of Yakima, Washington and Merrily and Annie Bardwell of Edgewood, Washington; cousins, Ed Knight of St. Charles, Missouri, and Amelia Wyatt of Knightstown, Indiana; and nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews throughout the country. After graduating from East St. Louis Senior High School in 1933 during the Depression, George worked as a cattle handler, following in his father's footsteps of working in the livestock business. He served in World War II in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. After the war, he became a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Meat Inspector. In 1968, the USDA transferred him and his family to Pensacola, Florida, where he was responsible for opening the USDA meat inspection program so that federally funded school lunch programs could serve federally inspected meat. He was proud that during his watch, no child became sick from meat processed in the facilities he inspected. He retired in 1977 after surviving colon cancer, which did not return. During most of their years in Pensacola, George and Stella were members of Grace Baptist Church on North Davis Highway. In 1993, after Stella passed away, George joined daughter, Nancy, and grandson, Kenneth, in attending Cokesbury United Methodist Church. The Farris Family wishes to thank the Cokesbury Family for the spiritual care and comfort they continued to provide even during the later years when attending church became more difficult. George was a member of the Pensacola Masonic Lodge # 42. Since 1999, George was a resident of the Northpointe Retirement Community where the friendship of the staff and fellow residents enriched his later years. Dr. Jordan and his nurse Jo, and later Dr. Summers and his nurse Tabitha, helped him sustain a good quality of life. Toward the end, Covenant Hospice provided comfort and dignity. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and the funeral service will be on Wednesday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m., both at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home at 1985 West Nine Mile Road, Pensacola, FL 32534. The Reverend Connie Ragghianti of Cokesbury will officiate. Burial will take place at Pensacola Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be offered online at www.EasternGateMemorial.com
