GEORGE CHRISTMAS ALBANESE It is with great sadness we announce the passing of George Christmas Albanese on April 6, 2014. George was born on December 23, 1920 in Welland, Ontario to parents Angelina (Bambino) and Michael Albanese who immigrated in 1920 from San Giorgio Morgeto, Italy. George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis, his four children Michael (Anita), Anne (Murray), Angela (Brian) and Thomas, five grandchildren, Margaret, George, Alexander, Sarah and Paul and his brother Domenic Albanese (Pauline). He was preceded in death by his brother Angelo. A consummate salesperson, George worked in the family grocery store "Albanese and Sons" on Hellems Avenue, followed by a four year stint as a travelling salesman but eventually settled into the real estate business for 10 years before retiring. George was a proud resident of Welland, enjoyed spending time with his friends, the excitement of the horse races and the challenge of a high stakes card game. George was multilingual, an avid reader and could complete a complex crossword in record time. He was especially proud of his Italian-Canadian heritage and his large extended family. George's life was distinguished by a relentless sense of humour, limitless loyalty and love of family. As he told his grandchildren on March 23, 2014, "loyalty to family is everything". A private service will be held at Cudney's Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at the Rex Hotel (Napoli Room), 346 King Street, Welland, on Saturday, April 12th at 12 noon. Donations in memory of George to the Welland Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
