McLean, Va.- Commander Forrest Richard Mitchell USN (Ret.), 91, died July 27, 2011, at Arleigh Burke Pavilion in McLean, Virginia.He was born on Oct. 11, 1919 in Richfield, Utah, the son of David Richard and Martha (Glazier) Mitchell. He grew up in Lehi, Utah where he played center on the high school team that went to the state basketball finals in 1937. He graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1942.After surviving the sinking of the Northhampton at the Guadalcanal Battle of Tassafaronga in Nov. 1942, he served on the submarine USS Redfin during seven successful war patrols in the Pacific. He was awarded a bronze star in 1946. He earned a master's degree in applied physics from UCLA in 1949. He served on submarines and as an engineering duty officer until he retired from the Navy in 1963. His tours of duty took him to New London, Annapolis, Md., Los Angeles and San Diego, Calif., Portsmouth, Va., Philadelphia, Pa. and Washington, D.C.Following his retirement, Cdr. Mitchell worked as a program manager for Tracor, Inc. of Austin, Texas, an electronics firm specializing in anti-submarine warfare. In 1968 he moved to Mystic to open Tracor's Groton Laboratory. In the early 1970's, he taught middle school science for the Groton Independent School District, and then spent a year teaching at the Thames Valley Technical College.While his sons were growing up Cdr. Mitchell was active in the Boy Scouts. He volunteered for a variety of community organizations in Mystic. Among them, he served as a member the Gung Ho Squad at the Mystic Seaport, on the vestry of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and as president of the Mystic River Historical Society.Throughout his life, he loved to work with his hands, both building and repairing items ranging from furniture to electronic devices. His largest project was renovating the captain's house in which he and his wife lived on the Mystic River. He had a life-long love of science and sports and was an avid gardener. He enjoyed playing golf and card games. After moving to the Vinson Hall retirement community of McLean, VA in 1993, he continued his active community involvement, as well as caring for the daily needs of his wife, Paulette, who was suffering from Parkinson's disease. He moved to Arleigh Burke Pavilion at Vinson Hall in 2008.He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Anna Paulette (Montesi) Mitchell whom he married on Jan. 18, 1943 in Lehi, Utah.He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne (Mitchell) Mahoney and her husband, Robert, of Annandale, Va.; his son, Richard Paul Mitchell and his wife, Marilyn, of Virginia Beach, Va; his son, Forrest Smoot Carl-Mitchell and his wife Charlotte, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Theron Stanford and his wife, Monika Danos, of Seattle, Wash., Sean Stanford of Charlottesville, Va., Dr. Emily (Stanford) Colson and her husband, Christopher, of Billings, Mont., Geoffrey Mitchell and his wife, Kursten, of Austin, Texas; great-granddaughters, Kiera and Natalie (Danos) Stanford, Harper, Aubrey and Liv Mitchell; a sister, May Louise (Mitchell) Rampton of Lacey, Wash.; a brother, Ralph Mitchell and his wife, Anne, of Spanish Fork, Utah; and many very special nieces, nephews and cousins.Services will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 13, 2011, at Vinson Hall. Interment will be at 9 a.m. on Nov. 14, 2011, with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.Donations in his name may be made to the Mystic River Historical Society, P.O. Box 245, Mystic, CT 06355.
