Ellen Blackwell Jenkins, 95, Gadsden, formerly of Boaz, went to be with her Savior on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011. She was the daughter of H.M. Blackwell and Hannah Ellen Blackwell and beloved stepmother, Ethel Blackwell. A hardworking homemaker and mother, she cared for both her father and father-in-law while raising five children. After being widowed at age 46, she worked at Woods Cleaners in East Gadsden, until she retired and moved to Boaz. While living on Sand Mountain, she ironed for the public and so enjoyed talking and visiting with those she ironed for when they came to drop off or pick up their ironing. She loved raising a garden and used her tiller until the age of 91, when she then had to try and persuade someone to crank it for her! She never met a stranger. Her hope and faith was in her Savior, Jesus Christ and she was a strong witness who always felt she was the least worthy, but so thankful for God's grace and mercy. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Boaz.She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leonard C. Jenkins Sr.; her son, Leonard Jenkins Jr. (Lenny); her grandson-in-law, Eddie Davis; and her great-grandson, Benjamin Clough; her brothers, Billy Ray Blackwell, Ira C. Blackwell and Glenn Blackwell; her sisters, Charlsie Sauls, Madgie Dutton, Sarah Benefield, Pauline Sitz and Sue Cochran.She is survived by her children, sons, James H. (Jackie) Jenkins, Boaz, Fred Ronald (Pat) Jenkins, Gadsden; and daughters, Edna Earle (Herbert) Clark, Gadsden, Reba (Jerry) Young, Gadsden; daughter-in-law, Sharon (Lenny) Jenkins, Rapid City, S.D.; grandchildren, William (Gabi) Jenkins, Barbara (Randy) Everson, Deb (Bob) Weinert, Cathy Fallon, Rhonda Griffin, David Clark, Dennis Clark, Dawn Davis, Dana (Gary) Price, Denise Monday, Amy Goodwin, Lori Jenkins, Jenny (Todd) Clough, Leigh Helms; 20 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; sister, Dot Jarrells; many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Gary Price, Todd Clough, David Clark, Dennis Clark, Cameron White and Earl Loyd. Honorary pallbearers are the loving staff of E hall at Attalla Health Care, her aides from Comfort Care Hospice and her dear Sunday School friends from Bethlehem Baptist Church.The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, and the funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Collier-Butler Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Wayne White officiating. Burial will be at Young's Chapel Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services directing.Flowers will be accepted, or donations in her honor can be made to Children's Hospital of Alabama or Comfort Care Hospice.Online condolences may be made to the family at www.collier-butler.com.
